Another common modern malaise. Probably the majority of people suffer because they do not eat properly, exercise or make enough time for relaxation. See diets and exercise and keeping fit. It can be caused by chronic illness or anaemia. If you suspect it is the latter you need to make sure you get enough iron, vitamin B12 and folate in the diet, or even add supplements. It can also be a symptom of ME, Glandular Fever, stress and depression. Although, ironically, a lack of stress or stimulation i.e. boredom, can have the same effect. Blood sugar levels and the glycemic index (G.I) of food is an in vogue topic for magazine articles. However, what is evident is that to maintain healthy blood sugar levels, well balanced regular meals are necessary; and sugary and refined carbohydrate snacks are, in the main, not recommended. You may see adverts claiming that cactus capsules will help control blood sugar levels. I have not been able to find any scientific data to back this up, but if you can testify to its efficacy let me know. Cinnimon and gymnema sylvestre do control blood sugar levels, but anyone taking medication for diabetes should seek medical advice before considering using gymnema.
